Norco 650′s – They B Here!!

February 7th, 2013

We have been patiently waiting for the new offerings from Norco.  Its not only new for Norco its pretty new for the bike industry!  Its the 27.5″ full suspension mountain bike.  The testing that we did on the Range model was very promising.

The 2013 Norco Sight Killer B

As Norco calls it the “Killer B” , It has 650B Wheels (The equivalent of 27.5″) larger than 26″ wheels that most standard mountain bikes have. The larger wheels size makes for faster rolling and the ability to roll over obstacles easier. We went down this road a few years ago with the 29er (29″ wheeled mountain bike) and it has proven to be very useful and popular with most of the world except in the Pacific North West where our trails are tight & twisty and the 29er seems like it might be a little large for some of our trails. For 2013 the bicycle industry decided to bring back 650b it is a old french touring bike size wheel as formally told here by bicycle industry guru Sheldon Brown.

“The 650B size was never common in the U.S., and it went into decline even in France with the advent of the mountain bike. However, there is a dedicated group of fans of this wheel size, who have been diligently working to restore it to its former glory.

The situation as far as tire and rim availability has lately taken a turn for the better, and the future looks rosy for 650B.” (circa 2011)

As for us at g.h.y. bikes, we are stoked to see and ride this wheels size! I have even seen a prototype DH bike rocking some 650B wheels but i don’t think they would like me to post the picture… so we will have to wait and see what the future brings for the mountain bike industries latest revamp of the old world wheel size, but it looks good so far!
