Zipper This was my first Dead Baby Downhill and it was an experience hard to explain. Basically it is a messenger based society of bike nuts and eclectic artists. I showed up in west seattle to find a ton of people and bikes milling around waiting to ride down admiral way to the finish. As I met up with Crappis, Steve and Brett I was stoked on the variety of bikes on hand. There was everything from vintage schwinns, custom double deckers, swingbikes, firebreathing monsters and one huge bike for a 6’9″ guy in overalls. [Read More]

The fire cracker started the race and everyone was off. Some raced, some cruised and one lady mushed her dog to pull her chariot. We picked up speed going down the steep hill skidding from time to time and I almost died once (getting a little sideways at about 30). We arrived at the finish line to see a barrage of pedal powered carnival rides and custom built fun bikes.

The rides consisted of spinning pedal powered contraptions that were pretty killer. Heres a couple of pics since it does no justice trying to explain these art contraptions. Spinner Spinner Spinner
The night ensued with live bands, beer, burgers and hotdogs. After the fuel had been added to this small flame the festivities started roling. First there was a piniata shaped like a cop car that was thwacked repeatedly by drunken riders with a U-Lock in hand. It was hung from a remote controlled lift that could have picked up a car (you can never have too much power).

Next was outside where the double decker bikes were put to use. Adorning pugil sticks and being pushed up to speed by there friends the bike jousting was under way. These warriors took the PVC pipes with boxing gloves strapped to the ends in hand and rode towards each other til one of them was knocked to the ground. Falls were numerous and ranged from the quite land to the feet all the way to the body crashing thuds.

I had one hell of a time at this event and will definately be attending the next one. Great times crappy beer and bikes. What else is life about? Thanks to these sites for the pics since my camera conked out on me.
